Porter-Starke

health healingWhen your emotional or mental health is out of balance, your body often reflects that imbalance through physical symptoms or behaviors. Simply put, your body responds to the way you think, feel and act. Not surprisingly, anxiety and stress are responsible for the majority of primary care doctor visits. Similarly, research has shown that those with mental illnesses also have higher than average rates of chronic health conditions, such as diabetes. Knowing all of this, we’re left with the question, “Shouldn’t healthcare services treat individuals and not just a single disease?”

At Porter-Starke Services, a not-for-profit community mental health center serving northwest Indiana, we believe they should. There is undoubtedly an interaction among health behaviors, environment and genetics on overall wellness, and we have always embraced and incorporated this philosophy into the care of our clients. Since 2007, Porter-Starke Services has coordinated with HealthLinc, a Federally Qualified Health Center also serving northwest Indiana, to offer an integrated-care model of healthcare that recognizes and responds to the “mind-body connection” of our clients and our community.

This program is designed to address the needs of the whole person. It is a fully integrated healthcare model that incorporates ongoing consultation among a physical healthcare provider and a licensed mental health and addiction counselor, resulting in a seamless transition of the client’s care between these providers. It is designed to provide you, the client, with the tools and resources to meet your goals by having these specialty providers readily available to address the range of issues that you may be experiencing. This client-centered, integrated healthcare model has been shown to cost less and to improve health and wellness more rapidly. While we have received national and local recognition for this program, the most important accomplishment is the significant positive impact it has made on the quality of life of our clients.

But it is not just our clients that can benefit from practical ways to improve their health and well-being. In our fastpaced world, we may all feel a little overwhelmed from time to time. It’s easy and common to wish to be a little bit happier at home, more effective at work, or to feel like we’re teetering on the edge of burnout. Understanding the mind-body connection and how it impacts our overall well-being is important for all of us. Porter-Starke Services hopes you can join us on May 24, 2012 to learn about health and healing, for your own life and for those around you.
