Lux & Mie Boutique

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Kate Salan has known what career path she was going to take ever since she was a little girl. Now, just two years out of Purdue University, Salan has plunged big time into her dream of owning a clothing store.

Lux & Mie opened two years ago just east of downtown   Valparaiso, not far from the campus of Valparaiso University. Her goal was to provide a small boutique that provides unique fashions that men and women wouldn’t be able to  find anywhere else.

“I’ve always loved shopping,” says Salan. “In high school I took a business marketing class and I made up a business plan. That’s the plan I used for this.”

And while Salan offers top brands in men’s and women’s apparel, sportswear and accessories, she says she’s not overwhelmed by the business.

“It’s a slow enough paced environment to learn as you go,” says Salan.

What she has learned is that customers want high quality items at a reasonable price. They also want customer service from someone who knows the products. And finally, lots of Salan’s customers are younger and prefer to do their shopping online, so she has created a nice catalog of items available for customers who prefer to shop from home.

“The store offers a chance for people who want to show a unique personality,” says Salan. “It’s also a nice place for people to shop who don’t like to shop at big department stores.”

She describes Lux & Mie as “trendy, fashionable and affordable.”

As a new business owner, Salan is learning what a lot of other start up business are learning – the most difficult part of the job is getting your name out in front of the public.

“The number one challenge is getting people in the door,” says Salan. “But once they’re in, they like what they see.”

Salan describes herself as a “fashionista who has always loved shopping for unique clothing and accessories.” Lux & Mie carries products from 50 different designers, says Salan, adding that clothing is available for customers from 20 years old to 50.

Lux & Mie is at 404 E. Lincolnway, Valparaiso - conveniently
located downtown across from Salon Amara and Terry Abner.  For more information, call (219) 464-3330 or visit the website at  Open Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
