Taste of India

Taste of India
Fulfilling a lifelong dream . . .

There’s really no other restaurant like Taste of India in Northwest Indiana. In fact, until Jasbir Singh opened his restaurant, the closest authentic Indian cuisine
meant a trip to Chicago.

The 72-seat Taste of India in Merrillville, Ind., opened in 2008 when Singh realized there was a significant Indian population in the region.

“There are 280 Indian doctors in the community,” says Singh. “This was a dream of mine.”

At 19, he was working in a restaurant in Germany. After 12 years there, Singh came to the United States. “I thought to myself, why not an Indian restaurant here?”

And even though the restaurant opened to serve a growing Indian clientele, today Singh says between 80 percent and 90 percent of his customers are non-Indian. He’s since learned an important fact about the region’s Indian community: “They mostly cook at home,” he says.

Taste of India serves certified Halal meats, vegetables, chicken and lamb. Singh says among his menu favorites are Biryani and a mixed grill, mixed seafood and lamb chops.  In all, there are between 10 and 15 vegetable items on the menu, and five appetizers.

“They’re all very popular among customers,” says Singh.

Along with the food, Taste of India also serves Indian beer and lagers.

For Singh, the Indian food he prepares in his restaurant is an important part of his culture. He is actively involved in the Asian American Cultural Center in Merrillville, which brings together Indians from across the region. There, they can not only talk, but enjoy the food, music and dance of India.

Singh also has gotten into the catering business and can bring his Taste of India specialties to parties and gatherings anywhere in the region.

“I keep everything priced reasonably,” says Singh. With lamb at $8 a pound right now, that can sometimes be difficult because of the importance of lamb in many dishes.  “We do the best we can,” says Singh.

Even so, diners at Taste of India can, on average, enjoy a meal for between $17 and $18. Add a beer and the total tab is just $20.
