Ella's Bella

From Head to Toe . . .

Gretchen Buck loves downtown Chesterton. Her business, Ella’s Bella, has been a part of the downtown shopping scene for four years, right across the street from the Gazebo in the park.

Her eye for design (at one time she was involved in interior design) has helped her turn her business into a must-visit place for women looking for the latest in clothing and accessories.

“My goal is to keep a high style of design at a minimum price,” says Buck. Figuring out what will sell is more art than science, and that’s where her practiced eye in design comes in. “You have to talk to your customers and you have to listen,” she says.

Buck keeps on top of retail fashion trends by attending trade shows in order to get ideas on the latest styles and designs that are coming out of Europe and California.

Some of those ideas will translate into sales, and some won’t. Figuring out which ones will sell is where Buck’s expertise comes in. “That really is the million-dollar question,” says Buck.  My answer is I don’t really know. You have to pay attention to your customers.”

In the end, Buck prefers to follow her own taste in fashion. “I buy what I like,” she says. It may be a simple formula, but so far it has worked

“I want to be unique. I want to be different from other boutiques. I want my customers to come in and enjoy the atmosphere.”

Buck says she realized how much people liked to buy clothes years ago, when she was involved in selling antiques. The more she watched people flow through the doors of nearby clothing stores, the more she wanted to be a part of it.

“I like to change things up. I like variety, and this business is perfect for that,” says Buck. “I like to turn my customers on to new designers. It keeps things fresh for me and for them.”
