Jake's on the Square

Jakes on the Square

"Life is Good."

On a skiing trip to Lake Tahoe a few years ago, Ellen Klinck stumbled across a small T-shirt store with a smiling stick-figure logo named Jake. She fell in love not only with Jake, but also with the clothing and the causes that Jake promoted.

Today, Klinck operates Jake’s on the Square in Granger, providing the same fun and family-friendly atmosphere to her customers that so attracted her.

“I never thought I’d be doing something like this,” says Klinck. With her husband, Terry, and 5 other employees, Klinck has been promoting Jake and his smile for the past three years.

“It’s a very unique brand. It has a positive, optimistic message and it’s a lot of fun,” says Klinck. “If you’re having a down day, this place is very uplifting.”

The T-shirts, hats and other apparel adorned by Jake is supplied through a Boston, Mass., company called Life Is Good. It has retail outlets across the United States and is heavily involved in charitable work. It supports the United Way and has created the Life Is Good Kids Foundation that looks to help young children overcome life-threatening challenges such as poverty, violence, illness and natural disasters.

While the foundation had been around since 2006, it received a kick start following the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the United States. Wanting to do something, Life Is Good designed a special American flag T-shirt and donated all its sales to the United Way. The final tally of that donation was $207,000.

That message of wanting to help others resonates with Klinck, and she hopes it resonates with her customers.

“We’re just a T-shirt company that specializes in high quality T-shirts and caps, but its brand imagery is so optimistic,” says Klinck. “We provide great customer service and we make it a point to welcome every customer that walks through the door.”

Klinck says that what makes her business especially fun, beyond the product, is the variety of people that visit the store. “Everyone that comes in appreciates the good things in life. I think we attract good people who want to spread goodwill.” ?

Jake’s on the Square is at 7225 Heritage Square Drive, Suite 242, near the intersection of Indiana 24 and Gumwood in Granger.
