The holiday season is fast approaching; so as you go through your gift lists and think of the perfect things to buy your loved ones, wehope you'll consider simultaneously giving back to your local Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan communities by "buying local."

In other words, we encourage you to consider patronizing locally owned stores to buy your gifts, locally owned restaurants to eat your meals, locally owned inns while you travel... You get the picture.  The concept of buying local has struck a chord in cities across the nation, as small businesses are credited with contributing greatly to their local economies and being uniquely invested in their communities.

In fact, many of the community events designed to enrich the experiences visitors and residents have in our  region are sponsored by local establishments.

For example, the first iRock JAZZ Fest will bring locally, nationally and globally renowned musicians  together to play at eight different venues throughout New Buffalo on Nov. 8. Nearly two dozen local  businesses have collaborated to make the event happen. (Visit irockjazzfest.com for more details.)

On Dec. 6, the Michigan City Summer Festival Committee will host its annual Festival of Lights Parade, followed by horse-and-carriage rides, a chili cook-off, hot chocolate and cookies, carolers and more -- all  sponsored by local businesses and nonprofit organizations. The celebration will kick off the lighting of  more than 5 million individual holiday lights that will be displayed throughout Washington Park until Jan. 4.

So you see, when you spend your money at local establishments, they are able to invest those dollars right back into their communities.

After considering the financial impact of Black Friday on large corporations and the need for such funds to be spent in locally owned establishments, Americans began observing Small Business Saturday on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving beginning in 2010. This year, we observe Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29.

On that day and throughout the entirety of this holiday season, please allow us here at INCity Magazine to help you discover the perfect gifts at the best places to shop, eat and play in Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan.

As you flip through the pages of this magazine, you will find information on a plethora of locally owned shops that carry nearly any item you could want, locally owned restaurants that serve foods to please any palate, and other locally owned establishments that specialize in providing services from haircuts and dental cleanings to real estate and insurance.

Then, when you visit any of the places you've seen on our pages, tell them INCity Magazine sent you so they may see the benefits of their partnership with us.
